4/17 - Steamwheelers drop Vipers, 47-29 |
 |
MOLINE, Ill. In the battle of the arenafootball2s top teams, according
to the latest Coaches Poll, the Quad City Steamwheelers (No. 1) handed the Tennessee Valley Vipers (No. 2) their first loss
of the season with a 47-29 thumping at The MARK of the Quad Cities in front of 6,354 fans Saturday night.
The win improves the Steamwheelers to 3-0 on the season and drops the Vipers to 1-1.
Despite struggling to start the second half in their first two games, the Steamwheelers changed that trend
as they had their most productive third quarter of the season, outscoring the Vipers 20-0. After the Vipers failed to score
on their first possession of the second half, the Steamwheelers marched right down the field and added to their three point
led when Steamwheelers quarterback Ronnie Gordon attempted a pass to wide receiver/defensive back Tim Dodge. The ball bounced
off of Dodges hands and fell right into the waiting hands of a wide open wide receiver/linebacker LaRico Cole.
That put the Steamwheelers up 27-17. The Steamwheelers defense would come up huge on the next Vipers drive.
The Vipers started out at their own five-yard line and after three incomplete passes by Vipers quarterback
Bryan Snyder, the Vipers faced a fourth down. Rather than attempt a long field goal and put the Wheelers deep in their own
territory, the Vipers elected to go for it on fourth down.
The gamble did not pay off as Snyders attempt was incomplete to wide receiver/linebacker Ronney Daniels.
Four plays later Gordon scrambled around for a 1-yard touchdown to put the Steamwheelers up 33-17.
Things did not work out well on the Vipers very next play from scrimmage. As Snyder dropped back to pass,
he was tripped up and attempted a pass. The flailing duck fell right into the hands of wide receiver/linebacker Carmelo Ocasio
who ran the interception back eight yards to put the Steamwheelers up 40-17 after kicker Ryan Geisler added the point after
touchdown.
The Ocasio interception was the Quad City Times Play of the Game. Dodge had the best night of them all, hauling
in eight Gordon passes for 119 yards, two going for scores as well as adding two tackles on defense to earn Baby Ruth Real
Deal Player of the Game honors. Playing his first game as a center was Steamwheelers lineman Bear Brown. Brown was almost
perfect on the night on the center to quarterback exchange and had a tackle, a pass deflection and quarterback hurry. His
effort earned him U.S. Army Ironman of the Game.
Wheelers defensive specialist Matt Forbes continued to improve as he intercepted his second pass of the season
to stop the Vipers first drive of the game. Forbes added 2.5 tackles (two solo) tackles and three pass deflections on the
night to earn ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors.
The Steamwheelers will hit the road next Saturday when the travel to Wilkes/Barre-Scranton to take on the
Pioneers at 6:30 p.m. (CST). They will return home on Saturday, May 1, to take on the Green Bay Blizzard. | |
